For Students Interested in
a Career in Medicine
By shadowing a Summit Medical Group (SMG) doctor for one full day, students can experience firsthand the critical role they could play as future doctors.
The 1-on-1 Shadowing program offers one-day career exploration for students aged 18 years and older who are interested in pursuing a future in medicine. This interactive program allows students to spend a day in the life of an SMG doctor in a specialty area of interest.
Shadowing activities include unique insights into doctor-patient interactions, testing, exams and procedures. Students also have the ability to ask medical professionals questions throughout the day that may inform and inspire them, and also help them better determine their field of study.
Participants are required to have their own transportation to and from the Shadowing Program. Lunch can be purchased at SMG’s Berkeley Heights campus and Florham Park facility. Students participating at other SMG facilities should bring their own lunch.
Listen to what previous participants have said about their experience in the 1-on- 1 Shadowing Program.
Meet Leo Oliveira
After participating in SMGF’s Shadowing Program, Leo went on to receive a scholarship from SMGF to pursue a career in medicine.
Why study medicine?
When I was young, I lived on a farm in a poor, rural community in Brazil. Every few months, a volunteer doctor would come to our village and provide inoculations, exams and care for the local people. I was so intrigued by his knowledge and ability to make people well that I decided to do something that could change people’s lives and make an impact on their daily wellbeing.
SMGF Shadowing Program
Shadowing at SMG gave me the chance to work with patients and to see their daily interactions with the doctors. The doctors in the GI department were very inspiring, and they encouraged me to pursue my dream of practicing medicine.
Pursuing an education has been an arduous yet fulfilling journey. I have had to work while going to school and take quite a bit of time off to save money to continue. This scholarship will help me realize my dream; I will be graduating in January 2018 with the hopes of continuing my education in either GI or oncology.
Who can participate?
New Jersey students aged 18 years or older who are interested in pursuing a degree in medicine.
How do I sign up?
To apply, students aged 18 years and older can submit their information online, including a 2-paragraph essay describing why this experience would be important to them.
